A friend of mine found this in febuary of last year in the snowbank near the garbage room where i work and gave it to me cause he knew i could play, it was the first time of my life i came across a resonator guitar.

The headstock had been broken and was repaired with 2 metal plates.

When i removed the metal plates to see, there was an erased logo, just a bit of green color inside oval ring.

Could you help me identify that little jewel cause it's the main reason i started building my guitar this year and i feel i owe it to her, what can i say, i am sensible when it comes to guitars!!!

TIA! Serge Serge Poirier38719.0215277778

Bonjour Serge,
Greetings from the UK, the resonator guitar could be a Regal model 37 from the 1930s.
They used a oval green logo. This is just my opinion ,we will see what others think.
   Best wishes   Rick

Hello again Serge,
Glad to help , unlike most Britons , I have always been a French coffee man, which is rare for a 60 year old!   I looked at some of my old guitar books and the Dobro looks much like a old Regal the heel on neck appears very 30s.
We have just had 4" of snow here in Hastings which is very rare for us.I live closer to France than London!!!

Serge,
Does your Dobro have a serial number on the end of the head stock.

Sure wish I could pull one out of the snow bank.

Hi D.L.,

There was no serial number anywhere on the head stock, it was too damaged over the years, but i just found number on the resonator itself, it reads :1896484 and underneath that number, it says: OTHER PATS PEND.

The back probably has been repaired also, it looks like a sheet of some kind of veneer or ply or maybe it's the way they made them back then?

Indeed i was pretty lucky that my co-worker did not play guitar and he had no choice but to give it to me cuz i pulled it out of his hands so quick since he had found her on my turf!!!!

Hope these numbers can help better for identification,

TIA, Serge

Hey Serge
Those numbers(1896484) are the patent number. The serial number would have been located(stamped into the wood) on the very end of the peg head.

Thanks D.L., I'll to remove those metal plates again to check more thoroughly, but my reminiscence of when i did remove them is that i didn't see any number. I sure will check that out though and come back on that matter.

Hey guys i've checked and it looks like the serial number was sanded off, probably for the glue-up of the headstock.Anyway, thanks to both of you, i think that it is a regal as well, really looks like one of their models. you can be sure i'm gonna be careful with that one!

I can't identify the instrument, but I can tell you that the patent with that number was filed by Dopyera in February 1933.

Thanks Peter,

Now we're pretty sure of the era, Is Dopyera the company that produced the cones back then, for this guitar brand

Anyways, now i'll only have to learn how to play with a slide.

just visited your website, beautiful work, great craftmanship!

Thanks again

Serge

The Dopyera brothers founded National guitars and then lost control of the company. They went on to start Dobro (DOpyera BROthers - they were from Czechoslovakia and dobro also means "good" in Czech) and they invented the dobro design. There's a lot more detail at http://www.resoguit.com/kbrown1.htm

Basically, if the guitar is quoting the Dopyera patent number then it is very likely to be a Regal built either for Dobro or under licence.

Hey Peter,

i just finished reading that full page at resoguit.com and have to agree with you on that one. Interesting that one of the first patents was filed on june 29, 1929 by Rudy Dopyera .I was also born on a june 29th. Isn't that amazing or what?! Talk about a coincidence! It's as if, not only have i found a guitar that led me to guitar building, but more like a higher power came and said Serge, happy birthday boy, your life is now gonna change and never be the same. WOW!

I'm gonna treasure that one til' i die, i'll have to get it appraised also,

Thank you very much my friend

Hope i can come down to Louisiana one day and visit you and your shop, you never know, i got some cajun blood from Magdalen island and i love the music from the Bayou.

aaaaahhheeeeeeeeeeeh

I've been to Louisiana a couple of times and I love it, and Cajun music, but actually I live in the UK, Serge.

I'm afraid the closest connection I have to your side of the Atlantic is that my wife is from Montreal.

Well let me tell you Peter that if i ever have to go across the Atlantic, you'd be among the first ones to know.

In the meantime, we still have this great forum of ours where we can chat from time to time!

Have a great day sir LouisianaGrey!
